AORAKI SECONDARY SCHOOLS SPORTS AWARDS 2024

Nomination Criteria 2024 

Please take the time to read and familiarise yourself with the following information before beginning any nomination.

Achievements must have occurred during the year of nomination which is 14 October 2023 until 13 October 2024. 

Sports Coordinators/Directors will be sent a link to the nomination form. For more information on making nominations, please contact your schools Sports Coordinator/Director. All nominations must have the endorsement of the school that the nominee attends. Students must still attend the school nominating.

Eligibility

All nominees must be full time bona fide students at the nominating school at the time of the nomination. Nominees must be under the age of 19 years as at 01 January 2024 and be in Year 11 and above.

* Pupils may have competed inside the qualifying period but unless they are still a student at the school, they are no longer eligible for nomination.

* This includes exchange students who have played a season but have now left the school.

Nomination forms

1. All nominations must have the endorsement of the school that the nominee attends. Students must still attend the school nominating.

2. Nominations must be completed online - no other form of nomination will be accepted.

3. In completing nominations, school Sports Coordinators/Directors must verify the validity and accuracy of the detail provided. This includes details such as how many were competing in an event that is mentioned as an achievement for the nominee.

4. Where a school has two athletes in the same sport that they believe are both likely to be in the top three or four in the region and thus could both qualify as finalists, schools are to send in nomination forms for both athletes. Please rank athletes; 1, 2, etc

5. ALL nominations (excluding Holiday forms) must be received by Thursday 19th September.

6. Holiday nomination forms will be available on the Aoraki Secondary Schools Sport Website and sent to Sports Coordinators/Directors.

Nomination criteria

The primary criteria for nomination will be high levels of achievement or performance in the nominated sport.

For Individuals, consider but do not limit to:

* Achievements on the national and/or international stage, this could be in open competition or through school competition.

* Selection or representation in National teams or Development Squads

* Placing or Excellent Performance in a South Island or National Event

* Placings in an Aoraki Championship event

For Athletes in Teams, consider but do not limit to:

* Selection in National Teams and Development Squads

* Selection in Regional Teams and Development Squads

* Selection in tournament teams

* Acknowledgments as player of the tournament and/or golden boot award etc

* Outstanding Performance

Ideally schools must only nominate one boy and one girl for a code. If a school believes they have more than one athlete who may be a finalist, they should contact the RSD and refer point number 4 in nomination forms section.

Conditions of Nominations

1. All nominations will be judged by an independent panel based on the nomination received on the official form from the schools comprising Aoraki Secondary School Sport Inc. 

2. Judges reserve the right to have the final say in the eligibility of the person nominated and determining the level of excellence.

3. It is the duty of the judging panel to select the overall award winner. The panel has the discretion to make the judgement under the conditions of the nomination and the decision by this panel is final.

4. In consultation with the school, the judging panel has the right to amend a nominee category if necessary. For example; yachting would be combined with Sailing, Multisport would be combined with Triathlon.

5. All achievements recorded in the nomination form must be from 14 October 2023 until 13 October 2024.

Award Categories

Year 11 – 13 students only, except for NZ Honours recognition

Aoraki Future Champion – Sportsperson of the Year. This award is for students that have excelled in their chosen sporting code as a participant. Students can also be nominated for NZ honours if they have been selected into a New Zealand team, or placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the National Championships in their sporting code. Each code/sport will have a male and female Sportsperson of the Year named. They will only be recognised if achievement in this code is judged as excellence. If not, no award will be given in this code for the year.

Para Athlete -  This award will be presented to athletes who have an identified physical, sensory, or intellectual disability that is recognised by any one of Parafed NZ; Special Olympic Movement; NZ Deaf Sport Association; or NZ Blind Sports Association and have excelled in their sporting code.

Outstanding Referee/Umpire - This award is for students that have excelled in their chosen sporting code as an umpire of referee.

Community 'Good Sort' Award - This category honors individuals in our community who have made significant contributions to the betterment of sport in your school through personal commitment. Whether they are coaching, managing, handling administrative tasks, mentoring students, maintaining facilities, or providing support in other essential ways, their dedication is recognised. Please note, this is an acknowledgment award with no selected winner. Each school is limited to one nomination.

Student Contribution to Sport - This award is for students who often go above and beyond to make a difference in school sport with their personal commitment. These students contribute in crucial ways, providing essential support even though they are not players themselves. Their extra effort is invaluable. Referees or umpires can be nominated if they're also involved in other areas. If they only referee or umpire, please use the separate nomination form for Referee or Umpire. This is a recognition award with no chosen winner. Each school can submit only one nomination.

Outstanding Sports Coach - This award is to acknowledge coaches that have gone above and beyond their expectations within the nomination period.

Sports Team of The Year - This award is for teams that have excelled in their chosen sporting code as participants. Students can also be nominated for NZ honours if they have been selected into a New Zealand team or placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd at the National Championships in their sporting code.

​​​​All Rounder - This award will be awarded to two secnodary school students - one male and one female - who have shown achievement at a high level in a number of sporting codes.
